Berawa vs Echo Beach vs Pererenan: Where to Stay in Canggu?

Canggu isn't one neighbourhood, it's four or five stitched together, and the stretch running from Berawa up through Echo Beach to Pererenan covers most of what people mean when they say "Canggu." Stay in the wrong part for what you actually want to do, and you'll spend half the trip on a scooter getting to the good part.

Here's how the three compare, and where each one makes sense.

Berawa: the easy, walkable base

Berawa sits at the southern end of this stretch and is the most developed of the three: a wide black-sand beach, two of Canggu's best-known beach clubs in Finns and Atlas, a solid gym and coworking scene, and a growing strip of restaurants and cafes along Jalan Pantai Berawa. It's quieter at night than the Echo Beach strip, but never feels remote. Everything is close, walkable, and open late enough to make dinner plans without much thought.

This is also where De Prestigio Villa 1 and Villa 2 are based, five minutes' walk from the beach, Finns, and Atlas. Berawa is genuinely the easiest place in Canggu to base a week-long stay: a beach day, a proper meal, and sunset drinks are all reachable on foot without needing a plan for any of it.

Best for: groups and families who want beach clubs, good food, and a short walk between all of it. Less ideal if you're chasing a serious surf break or want total quiet.

Echo Beach: surf, sunset crowds, and energy

A fifteen-to-twenty-minute scooter ride north of Berawa, Echo Beach is Canggu's most reliable reef break and its most reliably busy sunset spot. La Brisa anchors the beachfront with its reclaimed-wood beach club look, and the surrounding cafes do a steady trade in smoothie bowls and post-surf breakfasts.

Echo Beach is louder and younger in feel than Berawa. Surfers gather from mid-morning, the beach fills for sunset most evenings, and the string of beachfront bars stays busy well past dark. It's the part of Canggu that looks the way people picture "Canggu" before they've actually been.

Best for: surfers, first-time visitors who want the classic Canggu energy, and anyone happy to be in the middle of it. Less ideal if you want a quiet night's sleep within earshot of the beach.

Pererenan: quieter, greener, and increasingly the cool pick

North again past Echo Beach, Pererenan is the newest of the three to develop and still feels the most local: rice paddies backing onto the coast road, fewer beach clubs, and a slower pace generally. It's where a lot of returning visitors end up on their second or third trip to Bali, once the Echo Beach energy has worn off a little.

The beach itself is more open and less built-up than either Berawa or Echo Beach, with a genuinely strong swell that suits surfers more than swimmers. Inland, Pererenan's cafe scene has grown quickly around a slower, more design-led crowd: think ceramic studios and long-lunch cafes rather than beach bars.

Best for: longer stays, people who've done Canggu before and want less of the main strip, and anyone who prioritises quiet mornings over nightlife. Less ideal if you want to walk to a beach club for lunch.

So which one should you actually pick?

If this is your first trip and you want the beach-club-and-good-food version of Canggu without much planning, Berawa is the straightforward choice, and it's why we based both villas here. If surfing or the classic Canggu sunset scene is the priority, Echo Beach earns the extra scooter ride. If you've been before and want Canggu without being in the middle of it, Pererenan is worth the fifteen minutes further out.

In practice, most guests don't have to choose just one. Echo Beach and Pererenan are both a short, flat scooter ride from Berawa, close enough that basing yourself here and visiting the other two for a surf session or a quieter dinner works better than trying to pick a single "best" neighbourhood.

Getting between the three

Berawa to Echo Beach: roughly 15 to 20 minutes by scooter or car along Jalan Pantai Berawa and the coast road.

Echo Beach to Pererenan: a few minutes further north. The two are close enough to visit in the same afternoon.

Berawa to Pererenan direct: allow 20 to 25 minutes, more on a busy weekend afternoon.

None of these distances are far by Bali standards, but Canggu's coast road can get slow at peak times, roughly 4 to 7pm, heading toward sunset. If you're planning a sunset dinner at Echo Beach or Pererenan from a Berawa base, leave earlier than you think you need to.

A few practical notes

Sand and surf conditions are broadly similar across all three: black volcanic sand, beach breaks rather than reef, and currents that can be stronger than they look. None of Canggu's beaches are patrolled by lifeguards, so treat all three with the same caution you would any unpatrolled stretch of coast.

Traffic aside, none of these areas require a car. A scooter covers all three comfortably, and taxis or ride-hailing apps are reliable if you'd rather not drive yourself.
